The annual hurling Puc Fada competition took place on Sun.
June 23rd. Originally scheduled for Coney Island strand this was
switched to nearby Culleenamore Strand in Strandhill because of the extreme
weather conditions at Scarden. There were two divisions involved covering both
senior and U16 hurlers. A total of five clubs sent representatives to this competition namely
Coolera-Strandhill, Naomh Eoin, Calry, Tubbercurry and Easkey. Despite the
weather conditions a very enjoyable and competitive tournament was run off very
efficiently. In the senior category the honours went to Chris Madden from the
Calry club very closely followed into second place by Niall Cadden from the
Coolera-Strandhill club. In the U16 section pride of place went to Adam
Kerrigan from the Coolera-Strandhill club closely followed home by Kieran
Devaney from the Easkey club and Tony O ‘Kelly-Lynch from the Naomh Eoin club. The
winners will now go forward to represent Sligo at the Connacht stage of this
national competition. Many thanks to the organisers of the event – Kieran Tobin
and Tom Brenan from Coolera-Strandhill club, Bill O ‘Kelly-Lynch from the Naomh
Eoin club and Tom Evans from the Easkey club.
All rounds of the Dermot Molloy Hurling league competition are
now complete with Calry top of the group and Coolera-Strandhill in second
place. There is a three-way playoff for third and fourth positions between
Western Gaels, Tourlestrane and Manorhamilton who all finished on equal points –
the semi-finals can then be scheduled.
