Senior Championship
The senior team got back to winning ways last Sunday evening with a comprehensive victory over Coolera/Strandhill at sunny Quigabar. Played in perfect conditions, the Gaels got off to a bright start with points from Rory Campion and Daniel Kirby. Hard work around the middle and half forward line resulted in the full forward line causing all sorts of trouble for the Coolera rearguard during the opening period. Mid-way through the first half, the home side grabbed their first goal when centre forward Michael McGowan fired an unstoppable rocket to the back of the net. Further scores before the end of the half from Mark Gordon and Kirby saw the Gaels lead on a score line of 1-9 to 0-3 at the break.

The second half started brightly for the Gaels with Campion again providing the end product to some good work from Niall Hynes and Shane Doherty out the field. Three minutes into the half, Liam Ryan received his marching orders from the ref, resulting in his team having to play the remainder of the half with 14 men. This didn’t upset the rhythm of the match, as the green and whites continued to pile on the pressure, with further scores from Gordon and Kirby. Campion rattled his team’s second goal 11minutes from time after a very strong run from the 45’, giving the Coolera ‘keeper no chance. The Gaels closed out the match in style with two three unanswered points to win on a score line of 2-16 to 0-7.

The team was well served with performances in the full back line from Ethan McGowan and Michael Connolly. Jason Connor and Tom Mahon were both solid in the half back line, while Shane Doherty, on his championship debut, worked hard throughout at midfield. Niall Hynes and Michael McGowan won their personal duels in the half forward line, while the inside line of Campion, Kirby and Gordon always looked dangerous. Team on duty: M. Fitzsimons, M Connolly, E McGowan, D Hynes, N Hannon, J Connor, T Mahon, S Doherty, G Ryan, L Ryan, M McGowan, N Hynes, R Campion, M Gordon, D Kirby. Subs used: A Morrison for Hannon, N Crean for Kirby

U-16
The u-16’s played two matches in the last week. On Monday Naomh Eoin made the trip to Quigabar. The first half was tit for tat with some good play on both sides, but Naomh Eoin pulled away in the second half to run out comfortable winners. Drumcliffe/Rosses Point travelled to Castleconnor on Tuesday night, and after a good battle, the Gaels came out on top on a score line of 2-8 to 1-4.

It’s great to see these young lads out hurling, and the club would like to extend an open invitation to any players who wishes to play, that they are more than welcome to join our club.

Thanks again to Enniscrone/Kilglass for the continued use of the pitch for both underage and senior hurling. Thanks to Castleconnor for the use of their new pitch on Tuesday night for the u-16 match.

Good Luck Wishes
Best of luck to our two county footballers, Gareth Ryan and James Hynes, who take on Cork on Saturday July 26th. Lets hope ye keep the run going lads!!
