St Marys has been buzzing with the
visitors who have been with us all week for the All Ireland Fleadh. It has been a tremendous experience for all
and thanks to the many Club Members who have given up their time to make it
possible. We are particularly indebted
to the sub-committee Bill, Kevin, Frank and Francis who have worked tirelessly
on preparations and over the course of the week. Our visitors were hugely impressed with Sligo
and look forward to returning next year.
We look too forward to meeting them again and anyone who was lucky to be
present marvelled at the quality of the musicians (young and not so young) who
graced the Clubhouse over the week.
On the playing side there was a very good
Championship win for St Marys Senior squad over Curry by 1-17 to 0-11. This makes it a clean sweep of games 4 out of
4, which is a highly satisfactory start to the Championship. Next up is Tourlestrane. Mark
Breheny showed all his experience in leading the attack and the defence built
well from the full back line. The score
could have been greater as Marys failed to convert some gettable goal
chances. Unfortunately, there were a
couple of injuries and in particular we wish Colm Egan the best with what
looked a nasty shoulder injury. The Junior side’s Championship match against
Coolera was cancelled, which is disappointing as this team is playing well and
needs to keep its momentum.
In boys underage, this week sees the Minor
squad taking on Easkey at home on Tuesday evening and the U16’s play against Castleconnor
on Wednesday. Our U14’s have not built on their recent County Plate win and are
finding the higher grade difficult.
They suffered a loss to Tourlestrane last week. At the younger age groups, training for our
U10’s continue on Mondays and the U12’s are facing a busy couple of weeks with
a Group A match against Coolera. Then
the U12 festival of football for Group A
and B takes place in Markievicz Park on Saturday August 30th with
Groups C and D on the following Saturday September 6th. In the girls’ games training continues for
all our squads and the Minors play Drumcliffe on this Monday. Younger Members take note that Saturday
morning coaching recommences this weekend after the break for the Fleadh.
Anyone who follows racing is recommended to
attend the County GAA Sligo race day on this Tuesday (20th). There is a strong card declared and first
race is off at 5.20, for what promises to be a very enjoyable evening.
