U-16 Championship Div 3 Rd 3:
St. John’s 4-12  Geevagh 2-3 (played Monday evening August 17th  in Stenson Park)

Second half blitz sees off Geevagh.

A number of enforced changes to the St. John’s starting line up with  key players Cathal Byrne & Darragh Fleming out through injury. Manager Stephen Cronin re gigged the team with Shane Egan moving to midfield and the flying full forward Joe Spratt in an unfamiliar role in the half back line.
Dilllon Lynch McMorrrow opened the St. John’s account on 4 minutes and this was quickly added to with a goal of individual quality coming from Ronan McGoldrick who ghosted pasted the Geevagh defence but rifling an unstoppable shot into the Geevagh net. Shane Egan pointed for St. John’s shortly after. Geevagh replied with two quick fire goals of their own to stay in contention. Towards the end of the half McGoldrick with a great point from a difficult angle and two points from Adam Grace and a free from Jack Walsh tied the contest at half time by 1-6 2-3.
It was a classic case of a game of two halves. In the second period St. John’s went on the offensive and attacked at will. An early expertly McGoldrick point was the sign of things to come with the tide now turning totally in St. John’s favour.   That man McGoldrick gave a nice accurate kick pass into the welcome arms of Adam Grace and he made no mistake with a well taken goal.
Geevagh were shell shocked and didn’t know what hit them as the St. John’s forwards took over and ran riot.  Another McGoldrick point was quickly added to by half time substitute Ryan Gorman.   Senan Kelly made his presence felt when he came on with 12 minutes remaining and immediately went into the full forward line. Within two minutes he scored 1-1 to his credit.  Dillon Lynch McMorrow & Adam Grace increased the lead with further points while Senan Kelly added another goal after a rebound shot from McGoldrick.
The entire St. John’s defence were on top in the second half keeping Geevagh scoreless with tireless defending coming in particular from Mark McGowan & Jack Sayers. It was another solid showing from Stephen Cronin’s charges adding 3-6 in the second half without reply.

U-12 Div 4 3rd place play off: St. John’s 0-16  St. Mary’s 0-24 ( A.E.T)

St. John’s U-12 B team ended their season with a narrow  0-24 0-16 defeat to town rivals St. Mary’s in the 3rd-4th place play off in Kent Park on Monday evening.
It took a period of extra time to separate the teams with the game changing hands on several occasions such was the closeness of the contest.
The teams were level at the end of the second quarter with Cormac Roddy & Mark Flohr to the fore with some excellent individual scores.
The team lost their way in the third quarter and as a result went in behind by four points.  With great encouragement from managers Gerry Quinn &  Michael Hegarty the  St. John’s young stars battled back with gusto and  great heart and attitude and refused to give in.  The sky blues brought the game to their great town rivals dominating in the final quarter drawing level with a minute remaining.  They had St. Mary’s on the ropes and only for the intervention of the referee who blew the full time whistle could have ended the drought.
The game was delicately poised going into extra time. However St .Mary’s greater fitness told in the remaining minutes and they ran out winners.  It was a great season still for the St. John’s U-12 B’s who showed immense character in all their games and putting up on average 15 points per game.  The team finished fourth overall and this will be a great foundation to build upon in next year’s campaign.  The team were expertly managed by Gerry Quinn & Michael Hegarty
