Saturday 3rd October
Tourlestrane
and Coolera-Strandhill clash in an intriguing Belfry Senior Football
Championship quarter-final tie this Saturday evening at Markievicz Park
(5.45pm)
The
teams group campaigns contrasted greatly.
In
Tourlestrane’s case, it was a relatively straightforward procession to the last
eight with the south Sligo side defeating Drumcliffe/Rosses Point twice and
Eastern Harps once, while also securing a draw with Harps in the final round.
On
the other hand, Coolera/Strandhill had to negotiate their way through the
tightest group, where all three teams finished on four points. Wins over St
Mary’s and St Molaise Gaels was enough to see the north Sligo men through on
scoring difference.
Ultimately,
Tourlestrane will be slight favourites to come through this one. Crowned
Division One league champions recently, and given their unbeaten run to date,
momentum is with Ray Dempsey’s side.
However,
Coolera/Strandhill have always been difficult opposition in the championship
and have a number of players capable of causing Tourlestrane trouble, most
notably Niall Murphy offensively, but defensively Tommy Craddock’s men will
have their work cut out to restrict a lively-looking Tourlestrane attacking
unit.
This
game is likely to be tight, and has the potential to be an absolutely cracking
encounter.
Curry vs Eastern Harps at Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry 5.45pm
In recent seasons this match would
been a county Final as two of power houses of Sligo football in the past ten
years but this weekend it’s all about making it through to the last 4 of the
championship which both sides will be mad to do this weekend. Curry topped
their group and will go into the match with great confidence even though the
last day out Calry/St.Joseph’s beat them but that result didn’t mean much as
Curry had already qualified for the knockout stages. Meanwhile Harps had a
massive win over Drumcliffe Rosses Point and draw last weekend against
Tourlestrane has brought them into this Quarter-Final against rivals Curry on
Saturday evening in Tubbercurry.
Curry will be without Jason Marren
who misses out through suspension which will mean the scoring threat will no
doubt be on brother and county star Adrian Marren this weekend. He will
probably be picked up by county team mate Ross Donovan who has been playing
very well in the championship so far and has played at centre back for most of
championship so far.
Tony Taylor has return to good form
for Harps after his illness and the battle this Saturday with the improving
Niall McDonagh will be one of key battles on Saturday and whoever comes on top
in that battle could be difference between the sides.
Very hard match to call and it will
go down to wire and both sides will do everything in their power to book a place
in this year’s Semi-Finals.
