Secondary schools

Connacht A Senior Championship

Fixtures for the Connacht A Championship

Feb 13th   Summerhill v St Muiredachs in Cloonacool Community park at 2pm

Feb 21th  St Attractas v St Colmans Clairemorris in Connacht Centre. Time tbc 

Congrats to St Attractas Juvenile team who won the ‘B’ league beating Roscommon CBS 2-9 to 1-8

Coola and Colaiste Mhuire Ballymote will contest the Sligo Senior Schools Fianl at the end of the month. 

Coola Juveniles are getting ready to play the Connacht Quarter final against Ballinrode.

Jesus and Mary Enniscrone are through to the Connacht Juvenile Semi Final 

We held a first year blitz in scarden on thurs Feb 4th – 4 schools took part Summerhill, St Attractas, Coola and Grange

Primary Schools

The IT Sligo coaching scheme will start on Feb 22nd  and at present this group are continuing their training. They are taking their award 1 child course at present. The full time lads presently working on GAAmigo skills programme in schools

Coach Education Courses

Upcoming courses

-          Award 1 Youth Football/Hurling in Easkey Resource centre on Feb 19th/20th and 26th

-          Award Youth Football in St Molaise Gaels on Feb 26th/27th and March 5th

-          Online Foundation in St Molaise Gaels on Feb 19th

Completed Courses

-          Award 1 in Summerhill/Tennis Club had 35 participants

-          Foundation in Tennis Club had 22 participants

-          Foundation in Easkey had 15 participants

Reminder of mandatory coaching standards for all clubs from underage to Senior

The standards are as follows:

Inter County Management Teams - All Inter-County Management teams will contain an Award 2 coach. This person would ideally be the head coach;

Club Management Teams - All Club Management teams will contain an Award 1 coach.

 Counties are asked to target Club Management teams where an Award 1 Coach is required and provide them with the opportunity to complete the relevant Award 1 Programme.

Code of Best Practice/Garda Vetting

Any club looking to complete a code of best practice workshop please contact eamon mullen. Every coach in your club should have this qualification

Pella Indoor

There will be a number of pella blitzes throughout the County in February. The first of these starts in Ballymote secondary schools on Feb 4th. They are for u-8/10 level. Others will take place in easkey resource centre/ursuline college/ tennis club and banada

Divisional Competition

The U-16 County Divisional competition will be played on the following dates Friday February 12th/Friday 19th and 26th with final on march 4th in scarden. This competition is in its second year for the County and will allow players to play with their peers in neighbouring clubs in County. There will also be an u-14 divisional on the following dates March 11th, 18th, 23rd and april 4th.

Super Games programme in St Attractas

A new super games centre is takingplace in St Attractas Community schools at present with 36 players taking part. It is being run by teacher Peader Weir and 9 tyr students. It is a games programme for players in first/second year in the school. At the end of the programme the Connacht GAA will install a set of pella rings into the school gym.

Nursery Programmes

Clubs throughout the County are finalising their Nursery programmes for February. So Far the Full time staff have worked with about 20 clubs. Pat Kilcoyne has started with Tourlestrane., Ross Donovan with Curry. We will also be making one off visits to other clubs through feb/march. This programme has become a valuable part of our coaching programme keep up the good work.

North West Cup

The finals of the inaugural U-21 North West Cup took place on Saturday 23rd of January in Scarden. Sligo won the Shield competition beating Fermanagh. Donegal and Mayo played out a draw after extra time in the Cup Final. A date for this is currently being fixed. This competition gave valuable competitive games to our County U-21 team and management. Well done to all involved in making this happen. Special thanks to all the helpers on finals day

U-17 Player eligibility for Senior teams

The following rule has been brought in for U-17 players from the 1st of January 2016.

In order to play Senior football for his club this year a player must be 17 before the 1st of January 2016. 

Kelloggs GAA Cul camps 2016

There will be two new camps this year in the County. Castleconner and St Johns have requested to host a camp. Best of luck to both clubs this summer.

Strength and Conditioning Coach

As of next Tuesday the County will have a strength and Conditioning coach working with underage teams. This program is funded through Croke Park and the Connacht GAA. Neil Mahon from Sligo will be on placement from University of Limerick in the position until September. We welcome Neil to the team here in Sligo
