Sincere condolences to Christine, Daniel, and Emma and all the family and friends of Donie Kirby RIP,  Western Gaels Hurling Club mentor and founder of the club, long-serving member of Sligo Hurling Committee, and current Sligo GAA Leas-RĂșnai, who passed away suddenly last week.

Also sympathies to former player John Carty on the recent passing of his father Stephen.

Our senior team's Round 3 fixture v Manorhamilton was called of as a mark of respect following the passing of Donie Kirby. Following an impressive 4-16 to 0-4 win in Round 2 v Calry/St, Joseph's this game becomes the decider for a semi-final spot in the Dermot Molloy SHL, and will be played in the coming weeks, though no fixture has been made at the time of writing.  Check our Facebook and Twitter pages for updates.

In the opening round of the U16 hurling league last Monday, our team were victorious over Tourlestrane in a keenly contested game played in Kent Park. We lead 2-5 to 0-4 at the break, our scores coming from the sticks of Anthony Fidgeon (0-3), Robert O'Kelly-Lynch (1-1), Jack Hughes (1-0) and Cormac Henehan (0-1). Second half scores from Liam O'Kelly-Lynch (2-1) and Ethan Scully (0-2) ensured that we emerged victorious on a 4-8 to 2-8 scoreline. Goalkeeper Keelan Davey deserves special mention for his exploits on the night. Other players to impress on the night were Stephen Mahon and Oisin Davey.

Meanwhile, our U12 team had a good win over Tubbercurry/Cloonacool in their opening round game of the hurling league on Thursday. Dara Mostyn was our scorer-in-chief with several well-taken scores in the first half. Other players to feature prominently were Thomas Hargadon, Patrick Murphy, Conor Golden, Patrick Brady and Roghan O'Neill.

Our U14 hurlers face Castleconnor in Round 2 of the league in Kent Park on Thursday at 7pm. Having lost to Western Gaels in Round 1, hopefully Thursday's game will see the team return to winning ways.
