The Senior team’s Division
1 league campaign drew to a close on Sunday afternoon when Kent Park hosted
Drumcliffe/Rosses Point. Both teams needed
a win, with Mary's eyeing a second place finish in the league and a place in
the Division 1 final. The win was as
important to Drumcliffe, in order to have any chance of avoiding relegation to
Division 2. On top of this both needed
conflicting results from the clash of Coolaney/Mullinabreena and Eastern Harps
to assist with their final standings in the league. Drumcliffe struck first with a goal, then
Mary's replied with a composed finish from Rory Guinan who placed the ball into
the bottom corner after some fast moving team play. Mary's began to dominate
and were awarded a penalty when Jonathan Davey was fouled. Drumcliffe to their credit used this as a wake
up call and began to claw their way back into the game, and just before half
time Mary's were caught flat footed from a kickout, with Drumcliffe reacting
quickest to crash the ball to the back of the net and raise the green flag. Through
the second half, Drumcliffe were the more clinical side in front of goals, and
the made full use of a strengthened breeze that really picked up at half time. Their
direct play led to a fortuitous 3rd goal, when a shot crashed back off the
crossbar, hit a Drumcliffe player and ended in the goals. This was a real turning point and Marys were 3
points down with little time left.
Still we rallied and showed great composure to bring it back to a single
point. A final chance was created, but
it was not to be as the shot was smothered and the referee brought proceedings
to a close at 2-11 for St Marys and 3-09 to Drumcliffe. Unfortunately for
Drumcliffe results elsewhere did not go in their favour and relegation could
not be avoided.
