Sympathies
The St Johns
club and all of Carraroe were shocked and greatly saddened on Sunday when the
sudden death of Joe Davey, RIP, Drumiscabole became known. Joe was a selector
with our U16 boys team this year. His sons Evan, Keelan and Joshua all play
with our club. We extend the sympathies of all in St Johns GAA to his wife
Aisling and his sons, to his mother Deirdre, brothers Sean, David and Paul and
to all the Davey and Mc Cormack families.
Joe was a
true gentleman, always obliging, with a great interest in following the boys
games. He was a true volunteer who began coaching our local soccer teams when
he was only 17 and continued doing so for a further 17 years. Many of our club
members remember Joe so fondly for his selflessness and giving of his time so
freely. This year he assisted our U16s with exceptional training plans. He gave
back so much to so many footballers, both Gaelic and Soccer in our community
and he will be sorely missed by all.
Joe’s
remains are reposing at his home from 4pm to 9pm on Tuesday, with removal on
Wed morning. A guard of honour will be held for Joe on Wednesday morning.
People are asked to meet at Molly Fultons car park at 10am and we will walk
with Joe from his home to St John’s Church, Carraroe.
Congratulations
We say
congratulations and well done to our club Chairman Seamus Casey on being chosen
as the Connacht provincial winner for the GAA Healthy Club Hero Award. He has
been awarded for the great leadership he showed in implementing the Healthy
Club model and making our club and community a healthier place for everyone to
enjoy. E is a truly worthy winner of this award and he will be presented with
his award at a ceremony in Croke Park next Saturday October 20th.
Under 14 Girls Team
St Johns 3 –
3 ; Owenmore Gaels 2 – 4
St Johns U14
girls created their own bit of history in Kent Park, Ballydoogan on Sat. week
last when they overcame the challenge of a gallant Owenmore Gaels team to
capture the first Girls County Football title by a St Johns team. This massive
achievement seemed but an impossible dream at the beginning of the year but the
hard-working committee in charge of girls football in the club made sure that
every effort was made to bring about this success.
The team had
won only one match during the league as they struggled to find their feet in a
game that many of them had never played before. From the league their aim was
to win two games in their championship group. This was achieved and more as
they won four and lost only one to qualify for the final. They team were very
well prepared, with the management – and parents-leaving no stone unturned,
both on the training field and off. The support in Kent Park was phenomenal and
contributed to the victory.
Our girls got
off to a great start with a goal from Naomy Kaniki and Ellie Filan quickly
added a point before Owenmore Gaels replied with two points. A St Johns passing
movement from Failenn Mc Loughlin to Esther Oyewusi set up Naomy for her second
goal. An Owenmore goal just before half time left the Carraroe girls leading by
two points at the break. On the resumption our girls exerted great pressure on
the Owenmore defence with little success until Kayla Delaney sent a rasping drive
to the net for our third goal. 10 year old Rachel Mc Goldrick followed this up
with a point and then Katie Cox added another for the Saints. Owenmore replied
with a goal and two points but try as they might they were unable to get
through the tough St Johns defence for the vital goal which would have given
them the lead and the title.
This was truly
a team effort from the Carraroe girls with everybody playing their part, both
on the field and off it. All the girls in the panel have contributed throughout
the year to this great victory and they can be proud of their efforts which
were justly rewarded with Saturday’s achievement. A great deal of thanks must
go to the Managers / Coaches Olivia and Keith Mc Loughlin and their backroom
team who prepared the girls in such a professional manner. The girls section in
our club led by Liam Kelly can be proud of what these girls have achieved under
their guidance. Hopefully this is just the first of many more titles to come to
St John’s girls.
