It was a great weekend for Sligo GAA and St. Farnan's played their part in that success. On Friday night Fionn Connolly was part of the Sligo minor panel which defeated Mayo in Markievicz Park. On Saturday Ciaran O'Connor was coach with Sligo under 20's which defeated Longford for their third successive win in the Philly Mc Guinness competition. On Saturday, also James Weir and Dónall Hanley were part of the Sligo hurling team which drew with Mayo and earned a place in the Nicky Rackard semi final. We wish the hurlers every success against Warwickshire on Sunday next.
Our Junior team made it two wins out of two when they overcame St. John's on Saturday evening. The final score was St. John's 3-7, St. Farnan's 5-8. This was a very competitive game with both sides giving of their best on a very warm evyin Stenson Park. David Culkin got the first point of the game from a free. Then it was all St. John's as they added two quick goals and two points to lead 2-2 to 0-1. St. Farnan's were given a lifeline when Jason Mc Guinness got a touch to the ball that hit the back of the net. St. John's replied with a point, but a penalty shot by David Culkin brought us back in contention. At half time the score read St. John's 2-4, St. Farnan's 2-2.
St. John's began the second half with determination and could have had two goals but, remarkably one hit the post and the other shot was sent wide. St. Farnan's began to dominate proceedings with outstanding work done by Declan Cawley which made life very difficult for St. John's. David Culkin also worked very well as did Niall Hunt and Cormac Hallinan. The teams were level at 3-6 half way through .St.  Farnan's, however finished well with a second goal from David Culkin and one from Karl Hannon just before the final whistle.
The team was Niall Culkin, Kieran Kilgannon, Darragh Gillen, Sean Healy, Padraic Culkin, Niall Hunt, Evan Kilrehill, Cormac Hallinan, Jason Mc Guinness (1-0), David Culkin (2-2(1pen-1f), Gary Hannon (1-3(1f), Karl Hannon (1-0), Declan Cawley (0-3). Subs: Patrick Flynn, John Mc Nulty, Stephen Crean. The team play Drumcliffe/Rosses Point on Friday in Oxfield at 8pm.
The intermediate team had to field with a depleted side against Geevagh on Sunday in the league and were defeated by 0-15 to 1-4.
Easkey/ St. Farnan's under 12 team earned a draw against Owenmore Gaels on Tuesday last in division 1 of the league, our division 3 team were defeated. Both teams play away to St. John's on Tuesday week. On Tuesday the under 12 hurlers were in action. Wednesday's under 10 blitz was postponed due to the weather.
Please support Easkey/ St Farnan's under 14 football team in their fundraising draw for the upcoming Féile.
We send good wishes to all our Junior and Leaving Cert players as they begin their exams this week.
The club extends deepest sympathy to Sinead Groonell and family on the death of her sister Emer Groonell, Tullamore (aunt of intermediate player, Iarla Connor). Ar Dheis Dé go raibh sí.
