U10 Girls
Last Wed our u10 girls took on their Owenmore Gaels counterparts in their second challenge match of year at Ransboro Park last Saturday. A very well contested game showed how far along our girls have come in a short time with some excellent skills on show. Thanks to the Owenmore Gaels girls and their mentors for travelling.

Féile 2019

Last weekend saw a very busy weekend for our club with us competing and hosting national Féile competition.

On the field both our teams did extremely well. The boys won two of three group games to make the cup knockout stages. They travelled to Carrick on Saturday for a quarter final vs Leitrim Gaels, and despite a stirring second half effort lost out in a close game. The team played some brilliant football over the two days and this team will produce some top players for club and county. The girls got off to a slow start in Curry, losing narrowly in their first two group games. However returning to Connolly Park on Saturday re-energised the girls and a good win over Warwicksire instilled confidence going into the shield quarter finals. In Geevagh we put in a powerhouse display to overcome Hertfordshire and progress to finals day on the Sunday. We traveled to Castlerea and in a really tough and grueling encounter the girls made the final, beating Scotland 2-2 to 1-1. This set up a final against Drumcliffe/Rosses Point. We came up against a physically stronger and older team who blitzed us in the first half with 5 goals seemingly putting the game out of reach. However the girls refused to throw in the towel. A massive second half effort yielded 3 goals while we conceded none. Only for some heroics from the Drumcliffe goalkeeper we could have pulled the game out of the fire, however Drumcliffe prevailed on a 5-6 to 3-4 scoreline, congratulations to them on a deserved win overall.

Off the field this was a massive undertaking for the club. Much fundraising was done in the form of a Marathon relay, a bag pack and a table quiz, these events organised by the mentors and parents of the teams involved. Thank you to all involved in arranging and co-ordinated these.
We received sponsorship from a number of business’s in the area including Herrons, Tom McNicholas, VHA architects, Pharmaceutical Stainless Supplies, Poweright, with Whitesides Supervalu providing the bag-pack oppoutunity. We are very grateful for the support.

We hosted 8 games in total over Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Connolly Park. Huge thanks to Noel, Oliver, Martin and Marty-Joe for their work in preparing the grounds so well. We received hugely positive feedback on our facilities from all clubs who visited.
The club hosted two teams who had travelled for the competition, Warwickshire girls and Naomh Eoin (Belfast) boys. Thank you to the families who took in children for the weekend, it was very much appreciated and the kids were very well looked after. To all who helped with the setting-up of the food and disco on Saturday evening thank you very much, and to Johnny Banks for accommodating us at the Teeling Centre.

The weekend showed the value of this competition. The bond forged between the teams we hosted was lovely to see. Football is a wonderful avenue for our kids to meet new people and make new friends, while also been active and learning new skills. Life lessons learned as we win and lose together and celebrate and commiserate together.
