It was with great pride that Mark Quinn captain of Sligo's County Junior Football Team lifted the Connacht Junior Cup having taken on Mayo in the Final at Fr O'Hara Park Charlestown on Friday June 3rd. Our team came into this game with very little fuss or commentary and many expected Mayo to take the spoils, but with the talking done on the field of play, Sligo won on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-09. Congratulations to all concerned. There were no perceived stars on this squad but they played as a team producing some wonderful displays of the skills of our game. Sligo GAA is proud of its supporters who  came again in numbers to cheer on their heroes and to be part of the celebrations.
So without fuss the Sligo Junior Squad took the Cup across the border at Bellaghy for the second year in a row, lead by their captain, their Manager Kevin Walsh and their County Chairman Cyril Feehily.
Not alone did Sligo win the game they also received the Man of the Match Award in the person of Vincent Frizzell of Bunninadden Club. History was made as this was the first time ever in Connacht for the Title to be won back to back,as well as Man of the Match Award which was won back to back.
This achievement has set a standard for all our county teams as we look forward to more success in the weeks and months ahead. In former years county junior teams were very often comprised of players who were reaching the end of their careers and had probably missed out on a senior jersey, but now it is different. Friday's team may have fielded a few veteran players but it was comprised mostly of up and coming gaelic football stars who will have an eye on their future in the coveted county senior jersey; the choice is their's! This team are now in an All Ireland Semi-final on August 6th when they take on the Munster Champions. Will it be the only one in 2011 for a Sligo team ??
In the meantime the members of this winning team declared that they were postponing any celebrations so that they can give of their best for their individual Clubs in the up coming Club Championship.
Well done to all concerned, players, management, supporters and the county board, together you all made it happen !!!!!!!!!!
