Paths to the
final
Cathal
Mullaney
The
last championship meeting of these two sides was in late May in the opening round
of the competition – On Sunday, they renew acquaintances knowing there is a lot
more at stake this time around.
Calry/St
Joseph’s were made sweat for this hard-earned one point victory – a 0-12 to
0-11 success – and subsequently went on to win all of their group games,
topping the Group One table with five wins from five.
Shamrock
Gaels also impressed in the group stages, with their aforementioned loss to
today’s opponents their only blip. Four wins from five guaranteed second place
in the group, with both sides comfortably through to the final eight.
Calry/St
Joseph’s credentials as title hopefuls were perhaps dented following a
laborious five point win over an ultra-defensive Cloonacool, but their two
point win over St Patrick’s in an entertaining semi-final meeting showed just
what last year’s finalists can do.
Shamrock
Gaels, too, had to endure some difficult encounters in the knockout stages –
they defeated an improved Easkey by three points in the quarterfinal (0-15 to
1-9) having dug out some late scores, while they overcame Bunninadden by a
solitary point, 0-12 to 0-11, two weeks ago in the semi-final.
