St Mary’s GAA Club was saddened this week on the news that former player Mickey Galvin passed away at the age of 46. Mickey was integral part of the Senior Team in 1996 that won the Sligo Senior Championship.

Mickey played his early underage football with the Carraroe (Cornageeha) underage club before joining St Mary’s in the mid 80’s winning under 16 and 2x Minor titles in 1986 and captaining the 1987 side to success over Shamrock Gaels. Mickey returned to the then newly formed St Johns club in his home area for a number of years before re-joining St Mary’s in the mid 1990’s winning a Senior Championship. After St Marys success in 1996 Mickey was appointed Sligo senior football team captain by Mickey Moran for the 1997 season, however unfortunately missed captaining the side in the Connacht Senior Final that year against Mayo, due to injury. Mickey was a hard tackling defender who prided himself on eliminating his direct opponents contribution,  resulting in  many ‘man to man’ marking jobs of the oppositions best players. Mickey will always be fondly remembered by his former team mates and friends at St. Marys. We extend our sympathies to all the Galvin family.
