Bunninadden pull through

Bunninadden 0-16 St Michael’s 0-14

Cathal Mullaney

Bunninadden withstood a late St Michael’s comeback to capture the Expert Electrical under-12 Division Three League title in fine fashion, eventually emerging at two-point winners, 0-16 to 0-14, at Markievicz Park last Wednesday evening.

The winners held a seven-point lead at one stage as the final quarter approached, but a spirited fight back from St Michael’s ensured it would be a nervy finish as the gap was reduced to one, but Bunninadden fired over the final two points to secure the title.

The winners were well served by Luke Marren up front and the influential youngster kicked two excellent scores in the opening quarter, with both sides locked together at 0-4 apiece after the opening exchanges.

The sides remained level in the second quarter, with both teams with two points apiece in what was a competitive second 12-minutes – Lee Clerkin pointed twice for St Michael’s in this period.

The third quarter saw Bunninadden turn on the style, with the aforementioned Marren in sizzling form, pointing five times in 12 minutes and along with scores from Conor Mitchell (2) and Shane Murray, Bunninadden were in control at 0-14 to 0-8 by the end of the quarter.

St Michael’s, however, staged a remarkable comeback in the closing exchanges and reduced arrears to a single point with five points on the trot – Jason McGowan with three of these – and it looked as though they may snatch the title, but late scores from Conor Mitchell and Luke Marren ensured Bunninadden would claim the honours.

This game was preceded by the meeting of neighbours St Molaise Gaels and Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in the Division Four final. Both sides displayed tremendous skill and determination in an enthralling encounter, and St Molaise Gaels eventually emerged as winners by a single point, 0-10 to 0-9, having led 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time.
