Final round win for minors
Sligo 1-12 Galway 0-8
By Cathal Mullaney
The Sligo minor team ended their Connacht Minor League campaign on a high with an impressive seven-point win over Galway at Tuam Stadium this afternoon.
This was the side’s first win of this year’s campaign, but following on from a decent display despite defeat at home to Mayo the previous week there are grounds for optimism ahead of the Connacht Championship campaign in June.
With the players from both Summerhill College and St Attracta’s back in the fold in recent weeks, the Sligo squad certainly has a strong reservoir of talent.
True, this campaign hasn’t reached the heights of last year’s title-winning run, but in terms of seeing the full squad it has been a most useful exercise ahead of June’s quarter-final meeting with Roscommon.
This was a dominant display away to the Tribesmen, though the home side started strongly and led 0-3 to 0-1 after the opening ten minutes.
Thereafter, however, Sligo were by far and away the better team and outscored Galway 1-7 to 0-1 in the remaining 20 minutes.
Liam Gaughan kicked five first half points – four of which were frees – while fellow Tourlestrane player Conan Marren was on target for Sligo’s all-important goal in the 28th minute following great work from Luke Towey.
1-8 to 0-4 ahead at half time, Sligo retained their momentum after the break with Marren, Gaughan, Sean Carrabine and Patrick O’Connor all contributing a point apiece.
At the other end, Sligo quelled any potential Galway comeback with some resolute defending, and ran out comfortable 1-12 to 0-8 winners.
The win left Sligo with three points after their five league games, adding to a draw with Longford in round one. There were losses to Leitrim, Roscommon and Mayo.
