U21s
into Championship Final
Our U21 lads
qualified for the B Final after a pulsating game against St.Farnans where they
came out on top on a scoreline of 2-16 to 4-12 latst Friday evening in Connolly
Park. This was end to end only enjoyable for the neutral supporter as it could
have went anyway.St.Farnans were quickest out off the mark and had 1-2 scored
within the 1st 5 minutes after some sloppy defending we conceded a penalty
which Paddy O'Connor dispatched. The gaels eventually woke and Gary Anderson
made a great run from the half way line,he passed it into his brother Roly who
flicked it on to on rushing Ryan Philips who tucked it into the bottom
corner.St.Farnans gathered themselves, won their own kickout and went up the
pitch and took a fine score from play.St.Farnans won the resulting kick out and
after high ball into the square were awarded another penalty,Goalkeeper
Diarmaid O'Grady guessed correctly and made a fine save. The game was nip and
tuck for the next few mins with the Gaels having a few badly missed
oppurtunities. From a poor St.Farnans kickout Callum Tonry put pressure on the
defender, turned the ball over and kicked a point, from the kick out the gaels
won it and the ball was played into Tonry who found himself in a great position
and slotted the ball into the Farnan's net.Farnans went up the pitch then to
score another goal from a long ball, this was a ding dong battle spectators were
been treated to.Gaels knew they were under the cosh and needed to respond.1st
up was Ronan Sweeney who scored a great point after a fine run cutting in from
the side line.Next was Ryan Philips from a free, then Roly Anderson after a good
move, then another Philips point from play. The Gaels were on top but Farnans weren't
going to lay down and steadied the ship with a fine point from play. Then the
Gaels got the score of the half,Brian Mahon picked the ball up on the half way
line and after a one two with Cian Whiteside he buried it past the on rushing
keeper.Gary Anderson tagged on another point to leave it Owenmore Gaels 3-6
St.Farnans 2-6 at the break.
St.Farnans started the 2nd half like they did the 1st reeling off 2 early
points to put the minmum between the teams. After a lovely move Ronan Sweeney
found himself in space and cut inside to dispatch to the net. Both team traded
points throughout the half but towards the latter stages Farnans got themselves
level with 5 mins to go,the game was in the melting pot and whoever wanted it
most would come out on top.Up steps James Duffy to kick a fine score from
distance to put The Gaels back in the lead,it was a real battle in the middle
with the Gaels in possesion, holding the ball with great patience trying to
carve an opening in the Farnans defence, the ball is laid off to Brian Mahon who
makes a 40 yards burst sending 4 St.Farnan's defenders for Kebab and Chips in
Superfast with dummy solo's and then calmly slots it over the bar,it was a
score that deserved to win a semi final.Well done to our opponents St.Farnans
who gave it their all, unfortunately there had to be a loser in this great game.
The Gaels now progress to the final which will be played on the May Bank
Holiday weekend, its a long time since played in an U21 Final and we ask all our
