St. Michaels are the Sligo junior champions for 2019 and move onto the All Ireland club championship in the coming weeks. It was a game where they dominated possession but they failed to convert whilst the young Tourlestrane team benefited in the first half with the quick ball into their forward line. Three minutes before half time it looked like Michaels would be going in at the break behind and also bereft of ideas but it is amazing what a ball off a post can do.

Points were exchanged early on with Rian Bailey scoring two excellent points from acute angles, and Padraic McGoldrick scoring two frees. in the sixth minute the slick passing of the Tourlestrane team was in evidence as first Eoin Walsh split 3 defenders with a pass to the on rushing JP Lang, Lang could have shot but passed across the goal to Mark Lundy who dummied the keeper and drove to the bottom of the net. It was an excellent team goal. Two points from Shane and the unlikely Diarmuid Dunne extended the gap out but in the 10th minute Michaels breached the Tourlestrane defence and Ross McLoughlin drove over the bar when a goal looked likely.

It was an excellent start to the game and it continued for the rest of the half. Kyle Carty and Gavin McGowan scored two long range points and these definitely eased the nerves of Michaels and was a great response to the 1-2 scored by Tourlestrane. Jack Haran and Mark Lundy exchanged points at the midway point. There was a bit of loose play at this time and both teams found it hard to hold onto possession but this added to the excitement for the spectators. With the half meandering to the break a long range point attempt from out at the dugouts towards the town goal appeared to be dropping wide, this was after two bad point misses earlier for Michaels. However the ball dropped off the post directly to the unmarked McGoldrick who had to adjust his feet quickly and drove to the roof of the net without being touched. This was followed immediately with a point from McLoughlin and from being 1 down to 3 up in 30 seconds. There was still time in injury time for Kyle Crawley to make a great save and Eoin Walsh put the 45 over the bar with the halftime score 1-8 v 1-6.

Seven minutes into the half, Tourlestrane were level with scores from a pointed free by Lundy and a point from play by Darren O'Hara. McGoldrick responded with a pointed free and at the midway point Ryan Walsh scored to put two again between the sides. Tension was rising and two Rian Bailey pointed frees levelled matters with 9 minutes to play. It was helter-skleter at this point but pointed frees from McGoldrick and a few last ditch tackles saw Michaels take the title for 2019.

Kyle Carty was presented with the player of the match and after Brendan Leonard, county board chairman presented joint captains Paul Flanagan and Gavin McGowan with the cup.
