Calry St Josephs 1-14 St Mary’s 2-10

Calry St Josephs and St Marys played a very entertaining match in Group 2 of the Fureys Coaches Senior League Div 1 at Hazelwood on Saturday evening with both sides were welcoming back players involved with the county team in recent weeks.

Calry St Josephs started stronger with a long ball into the full forward line gathered by Aaron Flynn who took on the last line and finished tidily to find the net.

The home side followed up with a well taken point from Adrian Cummins whose surging runs from midfield were a feature of the first half.

St Marys by contrast were finding space down the wings and Calry had netminder Brian Shannon to thank when his quick reactions deflected the ball over the bar to prevent what looked like a certain goal for the visitors just before the water break.

The town side upped the tempo in the second quarter and were rewarded with two pointed frees and a fine effort from play by Emlyn Mulligan.

Calry responded when another long ball into the forward line found Adrian Cummins who wasted no time turning and shooting into the net with a fine finish off his weaker left foot .

Again, St Marys dug deep and finished the half ahead by the minimum when Patrick Maher finished a great move from midfield to the net.

Both sides were guilty of some bad wides in the early stage of the second half but points each from returning county players Conor Griffin and Daragh Cummins nosed the home side back in front.

St Marys then had a strong spell of possession following and restored their lead with a brace of close in frees from Emlyn Mulligan and a point from play by Kyle Cawley.

Calry manager David Cummins turned to his bench for some fresh impetus and energy in the last 20 minutes of the game with two points from Paddy Wolfe and a free from Eoin Doherty being them back to within a point.

The game ebbed and flowed for the final 10 minutes, with some wides and missed opportunities from both sides but it was St Marys who held on for a one-point win at the final whistle.
