Homeland Senior Football Championship

Drumcliffe/Rosses Point 2-06 Tourlestrane 0-16

Saturday Sept.4th

Collooney

Last Saturday afternoon saw what was a repeat of last year’s County final in round 3 of the Homeland Senior Football Championship between Drumcliffe/RossesPoint and Tourlestrane and the game didn't disappoint.  With almost perfect conditions Drumcliffe/Rosses Point were the first to get scores on the board, kicking 2 unanswered points in the first 5 minutes.

Tourlestrane took their time getting settled but levelled things off by the 10 minute mark 2 points apiece. Neither side went too far ahead with scores being exchanged frequently, with Liam Gaughan(8 points on the day) continually causing havoc for the Drumcliffe defence but a fumble close to the Tourlestrane goal line 5 minutes before the half way whistle saw another Gaughan this time Eoin Gaughan of DRP take his chance and scored his first of 2 goals of the afternoon, leaving it DRP1/4 to Tourlestrane’s 7 points at half time. The current holders Tourlestrane seemed to return to the field meaning business increasing their lead but equally DRP were hungry for the points on the table and a battle for the win ensued. The introduction of Rian Bailey for an injured Patrick Harte early in the second half gave Tourlestrane the legs they needed and he kicked a fine point within minutes of entering the playing field.  Drumcliffe were well set up with Cian Lally a fast and skillful player keeping Tourlestrane on their toes and Adrian Mc Intyre back from a recent injury proved himself a force to be reckoned with. Both sides had a number of wides but just 5 minutes into the second half the smart sharp shooter Eoin Gaughan added another goal to his tally for the day leaving it 2/4 to 8 points and Tourlestrane needed to start taking control as DRP appeared to be in the driving seat with men such as Sean Waldron, a player matching height with strength and Paul Durcan also an imposing figure in the goals.  Over the next number of minutes both teams continued to swap leads and level on more than one occasion but with 5 minutes and injury time remaining Tourlestrane took command of the game and kicked 4 points to widen the gap and secure the win.
